Why We Don’t Teach African Liberation Movements and Why We Should

Current U.S. Black history instruction remains sanitized and decontextualized, often co-opting Black histories into liberal progress narratives. Using radical Blackness (Burden-Stelly, 2023), this paper argues that teaching African anticolonial movements brings capitalist racism into view, fosters internationalism, examines anti-imperialist movements’ promises and pitfalls, and uplifts self-determination and full human dignity.
