A Critical Pragmatic Interrogation of Ideological Interventions and The Deficit Logic of Citizenship Education
This paper employs a pragmatic theoretical framework to critique deficit models of citizenship education by detailing the consequences of individualizing citizenship, framing ‘good’ citizenship as an outcome requiring democratic (re)education, and disregarding the mismatch between ideological metanarratives imposed on students and the democratic understandings they develop through lived experience.
