What Is The Point of Teaching History?
This conceptual essay uses the perpetual disappearance of Vanport, Oregon, to expose structural cruelty toward Black residents. Using pragmatist philosophy, I argue that the purpose of teaching history is to foster conditions for citizens to relate to one another equally, which necessitates critical framing across all levels of education.
