When Ai Interprets The Past: Historical Thinking, Civic Epistemology, and Social Studies Teacher Education

Using comparative content analysis, this study examined how four LLMs analyzed and interpreted multimodal historical primary sources. The findings showed epistemic countercurrents and patterns of weak sourcing, narrative smoothing, and uneven epistemic humility across models. As AI enters history classrooms, teacher education must address its disciplinary benefits and limitations.
