“They Want You To Believe That We Are The Ones Gathered To Protest The Unjust Murder of Black People Are Dangerous and Anti-Community—but I Think You Are Smarter Than That”: Static Shock, Comics, and Afrofuturist Pedagogies.
This research addresses the disconnect between traditional social studies curricula and Black students’ lived experiences. By leveraging Critical Afrofuturist Speculative Design and the character Static Shock, the study demonstrates how Afrofuturism serves as a Culturally Sustaining Practice. Findings highlight Afro-Science fiction’s potential to challenge anti-Blackness and integrate Afrocentric narratives.
