Counting Sentences V. Considering Evidence: The Impact of Prompts, Scaffolds, and Feedback On Student Writing

Continued concern about students’ writing proficiency makes extended writing tasks an important element of social studies instruction. This study collected writing samples that required students to make evidence-based claims from a high school geography class. Analysis reveals ineffective use of evidence that could be addressed through stronger scaffolds and feedback.
